O terremoto no Haiti nas últimas semanas reascendeu um debate urgente sobre a inclusão terminológica dos migrantes ambientais no escopo das migrações forçadas contemporâneas. Em agosto deste ano, o Painel Intergovernamental sobre Mudanças Climáticas (IPCC) divulgou um relatório em que faz um alerta vermelho sobre a possibilidade do avanço de novos desastres naturais sem precedentes vinculados ao aquecimento global. A abordagem ambiental contemporânea não pode mais estar desassociada dos estudos migratórios, tendo em vista que, na medida em que os desastres naturais ocorrem com mais frequência, milhares de famílias se veem desabrigadas, e como consequência se deslocam pelas fronteiras na tentativa de reconstruírem suas vidas.

Segundo a Organização Internacional para Migrações (OIM), cerca de 25 mil pessoas continuam fora de seus lares devido ao recente terremoto no Haiti, no qual causou até o presente momento, 2.248 mortes de acordo com a Defesa Civil haitiana. Eventos como esse, arruínam os lares de milhares de pessoas todos os anos, mas também dizimam oportunidades e condições mínimas para o restabelecimento humano digno. Por isso, o deslocamento forçado causado por questões climáticas se torna uma das principais respostas para sobrevivência diante do caos, do colapso ambiental e econômico que por vezes abatem os países mais pobres após os desastres naturais.

São muitas as terminologias que acabam sendo utilizadas pela mídia e pelos pesquisadores, para se referirem às pessoas que se veem forçadas a migrar diante das mudanças climáticas: “migrantes ambientais”, “refugiados climáticos”, “eco refugiados”, entre outros. Mas fato é, não há um consenso ou definição jurídica oficial que esteja presente no conjunto de normas que regem a política migratória internacional e que enquadre estas pessoas em um conceito amplo. A urgência destas reflexões pode proporcionar uma migração mais segura e digna para aqueles que fazem a travessia, pois sem o reconhecimento legal, estes migrantes se veem ainda mais vulneráveis por não estarem reconhecidos juridicamente em gozar da proteção de seus direitos fundamentais nos países para onde migram.
